Camera File Location Configuration

By default My Camera saves photos to the Camera folder in My Photos, and videos to the Camera folder in My Media. The Camera configuration tile changes where they go, for a device or for a whole group.

Storage folders are the whole of what this configuration controls. It cannot change resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, flash, focus, field of view or video stabilization, and it cannot send capture to an SD card.

The two settings

Setting Default What it sets
imagefolder DCIM/Camera Where photos are saved.
videofolder Movies/Camera Where videos are saved.

Supply both. A configuration that leaves out imagefolder is ignored in full, including its videofolder.

Writing a folder path

A folder is written relative to the device's media storage, as Folder/Subfolder, with no leading slash. Subfolders can be nested as deeply as you like.

The first part of the path is restricted:

Setting Must start with
imagefolder DCIM or Pictures
videofolder DCIM, Movies or Pictures

The characters | \ ? * < " : > are not allowed anywhere in either value.

Example

{
  "imagefolder": "Pictures/Inspection",
  "videofolder": "Movies/Inspection"
}

Where the files then appear

My Files groups folders by their first path segment, so where you point the camera decides where a user finds the result:

Folder starts with Appears under
DCIM or Pictures My Photos
Movies My Media

This is why the default photo and video folders show up in different places. It also means that setting videofolder to a path under Pictures moves video into My Photos, which is allowed but rarely what you want.

Capture cannot be directed to My Documents or My Downloads.

If a folder is rejected

A path outside the allowed list, or one containing a forbidden character, does not stop the camera working. Capture continues to the default folder and the headset shows "Configured storage location is not allowed. Saved to ..." after each photo or video.

Nothing checks the configuration before it reaches the device. A mistake is accepted when you save it and only shows up on the headset, so confirm a change by opening My Camera on a device and taking a photo.

When the change takes effect

My Camera reads the configuration each time it opens. A new configuration applies the next time a user opens the camera, or returns to it from another app. No restart and no reboot are needed. If the camera is open when the configuration arrives, it is picked up once the user leaves the screen and comes back.
