Updating Your Device Software
Updates keep the device secure and add what has been built since it shipped. They arrive over Wi-Fi and are installed by the device itself.
What the device needs first

| A Wi-Fi connection | Updates are large. The device will not download one over anything else. |
| Staying in Wi-Fi range | Do not walk out of range while the download is running. Leaving range interrupts it, and the download has to resume or start again. |
| At least 30 percent battery | An update that runs out of power part way through is the one thing that could leave the device unusable, so it will not start below this. Plug it in and wait if it is lower. 50 percent is recommended, and the device may ask you to confirm the charge before it proceeds. |
| Enough free storage | The update has to be downloaded and unpacked before it is applied. If there is not room, the device pauses and asks you to free some up. |
Disconnect the device from a computer before updating. A USB connection during the update can interrupt it.
Applications and user data are preserved through an update. Even so, copy anything you cannot replace off the device first, such as photos and documents.
How an update reaches you
It is offered to you. When your organisation releases an update, the device is told and offers it. Say "INSTALL NOW" to start it. To put it off, say "INSTALL LATER" and then choose "1 HOUR LATER", "4 HOURS LATER" or "8 HOURS LATER"; the device offers the update again once that time is up. Some updates offer "MAYBE LATER" instead, with no timed choice. You can keep working while it downloads in the background.
You ask for it. Say "MY PROGRAMS", then "WIRELESS UPDATE", then "CHECK FOR UPDATES".
Your organisation installs it for you. An update can be marked as required, in which case the device installs it rather than offering it. It can also be pushed straight to the device through your device management system and installed from there, without the device fetching anything itself.
What happens during one
The device downloads the update, checks that what arrived is what was sent, unpacks it, and applies it. It tells you which stage it is at.
While it is downloading you can say "PAUSE" to stop and resume later, or "CANCEL" to abandon it. A cancelled download starts from the beginning next time; a paused one does not.
Do not turn the device off while it is installing. The earlier stages are safe to interrupt; that one is not.
When it is done the device asks to restart. Say "RESTART NOW", or "RESTART LATER" to carry on working and restart when it suits you. The update does not take effect until the device restarts.
When to install an update
Install updates when the device is not needed. The process takes some time and the restart puts the device out of use, so allow for both.
Failed updates
A failed update is rolled back automatically. The device stays on the version it was already running and is never left part-updated.
Where the same update fails repeatedly, report it rather than retrying. Record the version being installed and the message the device displayed.
Checking which version you have
Say "MY PROGRAMS", then "ABOUT DEVICE". The version the device is running is listed there, which is how you confirm an update actually applied.
