Updating Your Device Software
Updates keep the device secure and add what has been built since it shipped. They arrive over Wi-Fi and are installed by the device itself.
What the device needs first

| A Wi-Fi connection | Updates are large. The device will not download one over anything else. |
| At least 30 percent battery | An update that runs out of power part way through is the one thing that could leave the device unusable, so it will not start below this. Plug it in and wait if it is lower. |
| Enough free storage | The update has to be downloaded and unpacked before it is applied. If there is not room, the device pauses and asks you to free some up. |
How an update reaches you
It is offered to you. When your organisation releases an update, the device is told and offers it. You choose whether to install it now or later, and you can keep working while it downloads in the background.
You ask for it. Say "MY PROGRAMS", then "WIRELESS UPDATE", then "CHECK FOR UPDATES".
Your organisation installs it for you. An update can be marked as required, in which case the device installs it rather than offering it. It can also be pushed straight to the device through your device management system and installed from there, without the device fetching anything itself.
What happens during one
The device downloads the update, checks that what arrived is what was sent, unpacks it, and applies it. It tells you which stage it is at.
Do not turn the device off while it is installing. The earlier stages are safe to interrupt; that one is not.
When it is done the device asks to restart. Restart immediately, or continue working and restart at a convenient time. The update does not take effect until the device restarts.
When to install an update
Install updates when the device is not needed. The process takes some time and the restart puts the device out of use, so allow for both.
Failed updates
A failed update is rolled back automatically. The device stays on the version it was already running and is never left part-updated.
Where the same update fails repeatedly, report it rather than retrying. Record the version being installed and the message the device displayed.
